The 2008 Confirmation
curriculum consists of five components:
1. United Methodist roots are founded in the Wesleyan concept of doing
Christian discipleship by a “method.” Hence we are called United
“Methodists.” The Wesleyan “method” was to talk to one another in a group
about their discipleship. John Wesley met with those early “methodists”
weekly in groups called class meetings. The confirmation class will meet
weekly as an accountability group in which they will establish a covenant
and hold themselves accountable to living out that covenant. The covenant is
established around four areas of discipleship: acts of justice, acts of
compassion, acts of worship, and acts of devotion. The covenant and
accountability group will be the focus of our confirmation experience.
2. Confirmation is a time of learning and experiencing Christian
discipleship. The schedule for learning and service events outside the
Sunday morning experience will be coordinated with the class as soon as
dates are available.
3. Spiritual formation is an important part of the confirmation
experience. It is expected that confirmands will attend church each week,
read the Bible and pray in their private devotional life, and faithfully
complete homework assignments.
4. The intent of confirmation is to enable persons to come to an
understanding of what it means to be a Christian. Spiritual development,
Christian education, and service to humanity are disciplines for the
Christian journey. We pray that these disciplines will help the confirmands
come to an understanding of what it means to profess Christ as their Savior
and accept membership in a local church. Near the end of the time of
confirmation classes, each confirmand will write a statement of faith and
meet with the minister to talk about their profession of faith as reflected
in their lives. The confirmand will be asked to decide if he/she wishes to
profess her/his faith and accept the responsibility and privilege of
membership vows.
5. The confirmation class will be received into membership during the
worship celebration, Sunday, May 11, 10:00 a.m. Family and friends are
encouraged to attend and provide support and affirmation for the confirmands
as they make this public statement of faith. May 11 is Pentecost, the
birthday of the Church, and Mother’s Day.
Confirmation meets
following worship, 11:00 am – 12noon,
in the last classroom.
Attendance on Sunday
mornings is essential.
