Earth Keeper Teams

Bellbrook United Methodist Church is pleased to announce an educational and service program for 2010-2011 prepared by its Earth Keepers Team.  The goal of the Earth Keepers Team is to help Bellbrook United Methodist church reduce its carbon footprint each year.  Each month the team will target a different area of focus.

Beginning September 2010, the 12 areas of focus are as followed:

  1. Vehicles and Travel

  2. Lighting

  3. Recycling

  4. Heating and Cooling

  5. Water

  6. Electricity and Energy

  7. Kitchen

  8. Worship

  9. Christian Education

  10. Office

  11. Grounds

  12. Missions

We take our inspiration from our belief that God calls us to be good stewards of the earth.   If you would like to join the Earth Keepers Team, please contact the church office or show up at the next meeting on Monday, October 4, 6 pm.

November 15th is National Recycle Day - Do your part - please!

September Focus: Vehicles and Travel - What would Jesus drive?

You shall love your neighbor as yourself - Matthew 22:39

Home Depot is offering $3 for incandescent Christmas light strings (which they will recycle) towards purchase of energy efficient LED lights, up to 5 per customer. Your old lights don't even have to work. Offer only good through 14 November.

No, Jesus did not drive a car, but this question makes a good point.  We suspect that the one who taught us to love our neighbor as ourselves would choose a vehicle with the lightest impact on creation.  On average, every mile we drive puts about a pound of CO2 into the air.  In a car-driven society, that adds up quickly.  Can we be more intentional about practicing ways to show love for our neighbors as we care for God's creation?

Earth Keeper's Option for Vehicles and Travel

  • Service vehicle regularly.  Keep the tires inflated to recommended pressure to improve gas mileage
  • Unload extra weight to improve gas mileage
  • Driving at 55 MPH saves fuel and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Stack meetings, rehearsal, and events where possible to reduce driving time and carbon emissions.
  • Arrange neighborhood carpools for trips to Sunday services and other meetings during the week.
  • Combine trips.  Make a list of places you needed to go and then plan accordingly.
  • If you have a choice of vehicles to drive, choose the most fuel-efficient one for your needs.
  • Use teleconferences or videoconferencing when meeting in person is not necessary.
  • Drive less, and walk and bike more.  Carpool where possible.

Low Carbon Sunday

The last Sunday of every month, we would like to encourage you to reduce your travel carbon footprint by carpooling with fellow neighbors to Sunday service.

We have placed, in the welcoming area, a map that will show where all of the members of our congregation live. Please take a look at it, and identify the people who live nearby you, or who are on your route to church.   In the coming week, you will receive an email with the names of those who could potentially join you in a carpool to church. If you are able to participate in this event, we ask you to record the number of miles you save so we can calculate our reduction in our footprint.

This month, our Low-Carbon Sunday will be September 26th.

Thank you for taking the time to help make this a success!  This will help us achieve carbon footprint reduction goals for Bellbrook United Methodist Church!
